Monotypic. Plumage varies, breeding male has distinctive "black face, chestnut crown, throat, and saides, a cream-colored neck patch, and two distinct white wing-bars." Breeding female is duller with more subtle coloration. Non-breeding are tricky and are very similar to Blackpoll and Pine. M/F differ, see above.
