2ISSF, common and Coues's. Plumage varies, with non-breeding eclipse male looking like female but keeping striking wing patterning. Sibley's notes male in breeding (Sep-May). M/F differ, although difference is less drastic than other ducks. Female is browner and mottled while male has a black bill (female brown) and more mottled grey.
