Monotypic. Plumage consistent, but note juvenile has interesting grey head instead of red. M/F similar...which is interesting for a woodpecker to lack a minute malar difference (or similar). Was one of my nemesis birds in NOVA as they were uncommon in scarcity but seemingly never around!
