0ISSF. Plumage varies, with breeding (MAR-AUG) sporting brighter colors and "crown chestnut; forehead black or chestnut, striped black; chin white; throat clear ash gray". Non-breeding (SEP-MAR) is noted as similar in BOW (or more accurately, alternate plumage shows dimorphism implying basic does not). However...BOW notes some of the field indicators are statistically likely rather than diagnostic, e.g., 85% of birds with more rufous crown were males. M/F differ, with male sporting a (more) complete crown in breeding. However, in non-breeding BOW notes M/F similar with males sporting more rufous crowns as a reliable indicator but not diagnostic (see plumage notes).
