Monotypic. Plumage varies, with non-breeding eclipse male looking more like a female (but keeping red eyes). Otherwise, hard to miss these birds! Male in breeding plumage sports many colors, a red eye, colorful crest. Females are browner but sport an impressive white eye ring. M/F differ, see above.
